UK Universities Face Space Challenges and Opportunities as International Student Numbers Rebound

With the UK government introducing new legislation in 2025 aimed at making it easier for international students to study in the UK, universities are preparing for a fresh wave of overseas enrolments. Early data for the January 2025 intake showed a significant uptick in international student applications and acceptances, reversing the decline seen in 2024. This renewed demand adds pressure to already stretched campus spaces, as institutions compete to attract students with modern, high-quality facilities and a vibrant campus experience.

Rising Expectations and Space Pressures

International students today are looking for more than just academic excellence. They are drawn to universities that offer a holistic experience—combining strong global rankings, career opportunities, and a rich campus life with modern amenities, social spaces, and flexible study areas. With international enrolments rising again, universities must ensure their facilities can accommodate diverse needs, from teaching and research to leisure and wellbeing.

Lambent Spaces CEO, Richard Scannell, recently sat down with Estate Managers and leaders across the UK and Ireland to discuss the challenges facing estates and timetabling teams.

Not unlike in the US, many campuses are still struggling with legacy challenges:

  • Manual, Infrequent Data Collection

Traditional space audits are often carried out manually and only a few times a year. This approach is time-consuming, disruptive, and rarely provides an accurate picture of how spaces are actually used. As a result, universities face difficulties in adapting quickly to changing patterns of attendance and space demand.

  • Aging, Listed Facilities

Universities in the UK and Ireland are steeped in rich history. Oftentimes, buildings are listed and maintain strictly enforced rules around updates and construction. Installing sensors can require running wires through walls or into ceilings – a headache in listed buildings.

  • Timetabling and Underutilization

Inefficient timetabling or classroom scheduling often leads to rooms being booked but left empty or underused, especially as initial enthusiasm in some courses wanes over the term. This results in wasted space and resources, making it harder to justify new investments or upgrades.

  • Complex Campus Layouts

Many universities are spread across multiple sites, requiring students and staff to move between buildings. Without clear data on movement patterns, it’s challenging to optimize services and improve accessibility.

The Need for Data-Driven Solutions

With international students forming a significant portion of the campus population and occupying a large share of purpose-built student accommodation, the stakes are high. Institutions that can’t offer a modern, flexible, and welcoming environment risk losing out in an increasingly competitive global market. The pressure is on to make every square meter count, ensuring that both learning and social spaces meet the expectations of a diverse, international student body.

How Lambent Spaces Solves the Challenge

Lambent Spaces provides universities with the tools to meet these challenges head-on. By harnessing continuous occupancy analytics from existing Wi-Fi networks, Lambent delivers accurate, continuous insights into how every area of the campus is used. This enables universities to:

  • Quickly identify underutilized spaces and repurpose them to better serve students.
  • Adapt to shifting attendance patterns and optimize timetabling.
  • Enhance the student experience by aligning facilities with actual demand.
  • Support sustainability and cost-saving goals by reducing unnecessary space and energy use.

With Lambent Spaces, universities can transition from reactive, guesswork-based planning to a proactive, data-driven approach—ensuring their campuses remain attractive, efficient, and ready to meet the expectations of the next generation of international students.
